Kinsman’s advice appears in a recent article for the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors.

Nashville, TNCorey Kinsman, P.E., a Senior Fire Protection Engineer for Summit Fire Consulting, recently published an article outlining the hidden fire risks of lithium-ion batteries and best practices for using them safely for the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, the leading national nonprofit that provides life-saving resources and support for the burn survivor community.

The article “Staying Safe with Lithium-Ion Batteries At Home” explains how everyday use of rechargeable batteries — which power phones, e-bikes, power tools, smart watches, laptops, and more — can pose fire risks if improperly manufactured or used. Kinsman explains common fire causes, offers practical safety tips about proper battery usage, storage, and disposal, and points readers to key fire safety resources, including those from the NFPA and U.S. Fire Administration.

Kinsman notes that batteries are typically safe when monitored correctly, but due to their high energy density and combustible materials, it’s important to take precautions to prevent the likelihood of serious fire incidents.

“The Phoenix Society connects a nationwide community of burn survivors, so it’s the perfect place to share this insight,” said Kinsman. “With so many of our everyday devices powered by lithium-ion batteries these days, I hope this article proves to be a simple, valuable resource for anyone looking to better protect their home and loved ones.”
